Description

Dirty Rice with Ground Beef is a quick and flavorful Southern-inspired dish ready in under 30 minutes. It features seasoned ground beef, tender rice, and colorful vegetables like bell peppers and green onions. This recipe uses ground beef instead of traditional chicken livers, offering a more approachable take on classic dirty rice while maintaining its authentic taste.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cups cooked white rice (preferably day-old)
  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 small red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or sauté pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add ground beef to the skillet and break it up with a wooden spoon or spatula. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  4. Add diced green bell pepper, red bell pepper, yellow onion, and celery to the skillet. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Stir in minced garlic, Cajun seasoning, dried thyme, and cayenne pepper (if using). Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  6. Pour in beef broth and bring to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
  7. Add cooked white rice and chopped fresh parsley to the skillet. Stir well to combine, ensuring the rice is fully coated with the seasoned beef and vegetables.
  8. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the rice to heat through.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and black pepper as needed.
  10. Remove from heat and let rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Day-old rice works best for this ground beef dirty rice recipe as it prevents the dish from becoming mushy.
  • For a spicier dirty rice, increase the amount of cayenne pepper.
  • You can customize this quick ground beef dirty rice by adding other vegetables like corn or peas.
  • This beef and rice skillet recipe makes excellent leftovers and reheats well.
  • Ensure you brown the ground beef properly to develop a rich flavor for your homemade dirty rice.
